PARADOX

TZF

THROUGH-ZERO-FLANGER

Audio control section

MIX - Delay / Clean. This sets a mix of clean and flange signals.

CCW - Modulated delay only
CW - Clean signal only
Center - Mix of Modulated delay and clean signal. To create a stereo image, a positive mix appears at Output A, and negative mix appears at Output B. The polarity of the clean signal stays the same at both outputs.

TZF - Minus / Plus This knob introduced the TZF element into the mix. When summed with the modulated delay the through-zero-flanging effect is created.

CCW (Minus) - Negative polarity TZF is summed with MIX signal. Can be tweaked to produce full cancellation at the Zero point.
CW (Plus) - Positive polarity TZF is summed with MIX signal. Produces a less intense, but more musical sounding flange.
Center - No TZF is added to the mix.

REGEN - Minus / Plus regeneration. This knob adds a metallic resonance to the signal. It feeds the modulated delay signal back into the delay's input, creating feedback.

CCW (Minus) - The modulated delay is inverted and is fed back into it's input. This is most noticeable at Output B
CW (Plus) The modulated delay polarity is kept the same and is fed back into it's input. This is most noticeable at Output A
Center - No regeneration is added.

Modulation section

ENV - Envelope control. This knob allows the modulated delay time to be affected by the dynamics of your playing.

For best results:

Dial in a very audible flanging effect in the audio control section
Turn the Manual knob all the way down.
Turn the Width knob all the way down.
Turn the ENV knob all the way up
Play - you should hear the delay responding to your playing. Start turning ENV knob down and adjust for desired effect. Turning the Manual control up will limit the lowest point of the flange, which is useful for coverting the best range. Turning Manual up all the way will diminish the effect.

From here you can dial in some Width and adjust the speed and get a constant sweep with envelope-induced nuances. Tweak away….

DEPTH - This controls the width, or depth of the sweep. Turn all the way down to stop the flanger from sweeping.

With some very careful tweaking of the DEPTH and MANUAL knobs, you can get some very unique sweeping effects. SInce you can flange over the zerop point, you can create an uneven asemetrical double sided sweep. It's absolutely amazing.

MANUAL - This controls the base delay time of the modulated delay.

CCW - Longest delay, lowest flange point
CW - Shortest delay, highest flange point

When using Envelope control - Manual can be used to zero in on the exact part of the sweep you want. But keep in mind that as you turn the Manual knob up, you are diminishing the Envelope control effect. The best Enevelope controled sweep comes from careful adjustment of the Manual knob and the Enevelope knob.

When using an expression pedal - The Manual knob sets the low point of the sweep. This is useful for calibrating hte travel of a pedal. Manual will allow you to place the Through-zereo-flange point at a specific part of the pedal's sweep.

Using with Depth (LFO) - The Manual knob shifts the range of the sweep. It's most noticeable at low Depth settings.

SPEED - Sets the speed of the sweep when the DEPTH knob is turned up.

When using an expression pedal - The SPEED knob sets the fastest speed. When hooking up an expression pedal, be sure to turn the SPEED knob up all the way. Then, floor the pedal and listen to the speed. If you want the maximum speed to be a little slower, turn the SPEED knob down.

Connections

INPUT - Guitar input. This input will take a wide variety of input levels, including most active pickup systems and line level signals from mixing bards.

Stereo Outputs - Paradox TZF can create a wide stereo image when hooked up in stereo. The stereo image is created by phase inversion of the flanging effect. In order to get a realistic, wide image, you must have the MIX knob set so that some dry signal is in the mix. That means, don't leave it full CCW.

Output A - Consists of Dry signal and flange signal

Output B - Consists of Dry signal and inverted flange signal.

Important - If you record in stereo, you may experience a "loss of effect" in the event that the left and right program material is summed to mono. This is common among just about all stereo modulation effects.

MANUAL Jack - An expression pedal can be plugged in here. See MANUAL.

SPEED Jack - An expression pedal can be plugged in here. See SPEED.

9VAC - Power. Like Captain Coconut and Captain Coconut 2, Paradox TZF uses 9 Volts, AC.

Settings

Paradox TZF creates so many cool sounds, it's hard to decide which one to stick with. But there is a bit of a learning curve involved, it's not the same as the typical mini-stomp-box flangers. There's a lot more going on inside Paradox TZF. Here are some suggestions.

Positive TZF - A very pretty sound..the true essence of flanging.. think Brian May, Keep Yourself Alive.

MIX - CCW (no dry signal) / TZF - CW (positive) / REGEN - Center (off)

ENV - CCW (off) / WIDTH- CCW (off) / MANUAL - Around 1:00

Turn Manual slowly - as you get to around 1:00 it should get to the Zero flange point. As you approach the Zero point, you hear the flange effect go up high. Keep turning and you hear it go over the top, and start going down again. At this point, it's over the top. As you turn the knob back down, it goes back over the top again and goes back down.

Negative TZF - Mind blowing...acid trip...think Hendrix, House burning down.

MIX - CCW (no dry signal) / TZF - CCW (negative) / REGEN - Center (off)

ENV - CCW (off) / WIDTH- CCW (off) / MANUAL - Around 1:00

Turn Manual slowly - as you get to around 1:00 it should get to the Zero flange point. If you zoom in on it you can get full cancellation . Once you find that point, back off on the TZF knob just a hair. Tweak back and fourth until it nulls out completely. Now, start to experiment with WIDTH and ECS.

Turn the MIX control CW to include some dry signal into the mix. This will help fill the spaces when the full cancellation occurs.
