Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush

On June 2, 2005 I finally got to meet one of my all-time favorite guitarists, Frank Marino. We've phoned and emailed over the past couple of years, and it was great to have a chance to meet him and see his amazing show (this is actually the third time, I saw him twice in the 80's). This was the first gig in his Spring, 2005 tour and it was at the Downtown club in Farmingdale NY (Long Island). I picked up a new digital camera on the way to the show because my old Sony Mavica died. I had no time to learn how to use the thing, so most of the pics didn't come out good. Here are the ones that weren't too blurry or dark to salvage.

Check out the Downtown club in Farmingdale NY. I thoroughly enjoyed being there. The sound was great, I was impressed. Nice and loud but not too loud. The clips below are from that show.

If you're a long time fan, or you've never heard of him, you should check out the Mahogany Rush fan page.

Order the new double CD live set. Trust me, it's money well spent. If you're at FoxroxElectronics.com this is the kind of music you can't get enough of.

I got there before show time and Frank gave me a little demo of his effects. The blue box is a Paradox TZF and the silver one is an Octron. The other stuff is a mixture of vintage, a couple of boss pedals, and a Teese wah, but the heart of his main tone comes from equipment he designed and built himself which includes his main switcher and preamp. He even modified the Octron I sent him! Frank knows electronics.

Click here for a clip of "Tales of the unexpected". Check out Octron's screaming upper octave that starts about half way through the clip.

Click here for an excerpt from "He's calling". The flanging effect you hear is Paradox TZF

Backstage before the show, stretching some new strings.

(I didn't think I'd be able to use this one - my finger was over the lense! I like it better this way, it would make a good CD cover.)

Frank doing his thing. This went on for 3+ hours..!
