This page features some audio samples created using some of the different effects featured in this website. Right now the focus is on Captain Coconut 2.

8/14/01
Here are some new audio clips. They were made with a Captain Coconut 2.
Here's the signal flow:
Left handed Carvin BOLT guitar (strat style) > Captain Coconut 2 (Octave>FuzzFoot>Provibe) > Marshall JCM800 50W 1X12 all tube combo amp. Line out of JCM800 run into the clean input of a Carvin SX100, 100W 2X12" solid state combo amp.
Marshall miked with a Shure SM58, Carvin miked with a Shure SM59. Mikes mixed on a Kelsey Pro 2/3 Mixing board, reverb added.

Live clip recorded on a Sony Minidisc recorder.

Vibro

This clip was done with the FuzzFoot on, FUZZ at 90%, guitar volume at 80% for a clean sound. The Provibe is after the Fuzz. The CENTER, WIDTH, and SPEED controls are all at around 40%.

Vibro.mp3 - 403 KB

Octave ring

This clip shows off some of the "ring modulator" qualities of the Octave effect. Listen to the strange, mathematical harmonies that are added to the guitar's notes. This also sounds great on keyboards.

Octave ring.mp3 - 523 KB

Octave vibe

A little Hendrix-inspired jamming with the Octave and Vibe effects going.

Octave vibe.mp3 - 402 KB

Octave with fuzz

This is a really cool effect. The Octave is run into the Fuzz and the controles are set so that it produces a natural volume-swell effect, consisting of mostly the upper octave.

Octave with fuzz.mp3 - 430 KB

Oct5

This clip was recorded live. The sound quality is below par, but it gives an interesting example of what the Octave effect can sound like when used with other effects. During the lead, a Leslie simulator (not the Provibe) was used. Listen to how the upper octave jumps out during some of the bends.

Oct5.mp3 - 635 KB

Fuzz clean up

This clip shows how well the FuzzFoot cleans up when you roll back the volume knob on your guitar. The FUZZ knob must be set at or below 90% for a good clean up. The FuzzFoot is on throughout the entire clip. For the semi-clean, slightly overdriven sound, the guitar's volume knob is at around 70%. At the end of the rhythm part, the guitar volume is turned all the way up for a fat, fuzzed-out tone. The FuzzCard used is the standard PNP Si/Ge hybrid.

New audio file 7/18/01

Captain Coconut 2 Provibe ECS demo

This file was recorded with the following equipment:

Carvin bolt lefty guitar > Captain Coconut 2 Provibe > Marshall JCM800 50W 1X12" Combo > Sure SM59 > Kelsey 2/3 Mixer > Roland RAP-10 sound card in computer. There's a little crackle on the recording, I think I overloaded the sound card. I'll do a new file that sounds better, I just wanted to get this on line so people could hear what ECS sounds like.

This file demonstrates the dynamic speed control of the ECS (Envelope Controlled Speed) feature. Notice how it slows down during quiet passages and speeds up when the strings are hit hard. Also, listen to the tone of the Provibe.

------------------

Here are some new audio clips that were recorded live on 12/31/00. The band is North Star, a 7- piece Northern New Jersey-based band that specializes in weddings and corporate parties. Russ Bonagura is the band leader and Dave Fox is on lead guitar. This gig was a massive new years bash in a hotel ball room with 600+ in attendance.

The effects include a vintage Clyde McCoy wah wah pedal, Captain coconut, Korg G-4 Leslie simulator (which I rarely use). The Captain coconut is patched so that the Fuzzfoot is first, followed by the Octave and the Provibe.

Boogieoogy lead.mp3 (477Kb)
FuzzFoot with Provibe. Kind of an Ernie Eisley "Who's that Lady" type of sound. The Wah wah pedal gets kicked in towards the end of the lead.

Blue lead.mp3 (657Kb)
FuzzFoot with Provibe. Through the entire lead, the FuzzFoot is on with the guitar's volume knob turned down. Listen to how clean and cutting the tone is. About half way through, the Provibe is kicked in. Listen to the magic tone that comes through during the pull-off, hammer-on runs towards the end. That sound is like ear candy to me! When Russ says "looks like we got about ten minutes", it's because it was ten minutes to midnight, happy new year!

Superstition lead.mp3 (551Kb)
Octave/Fuzzfoot/Provibe This lead starts out with the Octave and Fuzzfoot going. Also, I was using a Korg G-4 Leslie simulator which I switched off after the first couple licks. The Octave is on only for the very first lick. Then, I kick in the Wah wah pedal. For the second part of the lead I kick in the Provibe.

Here are bunch of "mini-songs" that show Captain Coconut in action. The size of each file is listed, so you know what you're in for as far as download time. If you're into the whole Hendrix/Trower scene, you should check them out - you might like this stuff. All audio clips feature the wonderful Dave Fox (me) on guitar. I know my timing is a little funky, but I think you'll hear some of the sounds you're looking for. Have fun listening and if there's anything you like in particular, drop me a line. Thanks!

Noodlevibe

Some free-form pentatonic noodling with the Provibe set up for medium-fast speed and wide sweep. Mono file -quick download.

Noodlevibe.mp3 - 98 K

Stitch

A riff loosely based on Robin Trower's Too Rolling Stoned - the jam riff. This shows the subtle side of the Vibe that really brings out the best from a strat. The riff is doubled in stereo.

Stitch.mp3 - 181 K

Rental

Two guitars - one left and one right. Both of them with the Provibe going, VIBRATO mode selected with medium speed setting. Strat with middle pickup.

Rental.mp3 - 181 K

Nut

A nice little blues riff that features three guitars - a vibe rythm on each side and a lead that starts with Octave and changes over to FuzzFoot. Vibe - CENTER=50%, WIDTH 50%, SPEED, 30% one side 60% other side. Fuzz - GRIT in the middle, DRIVE 70%.

Nut.mp3 - 237 K Medium quality

Yard5

A groovy little riff done with Robin Trower in mind. Dig that vibe sound and the little Octave sounds!!!!

Yard5.mp3 - 460 K High quality

VIBE202

Some plain old E chord strumming with the Provibe going.

Vibe202.mp3 - 192 K Medium quality

Cedar

This tune features the Provibe effect on the rhythm guitars, one left and one right. The first lead was done using the Octave effect. The second lead was done using the Fuzzfoot effect. Notice that at the start of the second lead (after the octave part), the Fuzzfoot is engaged with the guitar's volume knob rolled back to give a semi-clean tone. As the volume knob is turned up, the sustain and fuzz increase.

CedarISDN.mp3 - 1,267 K High quality

Cedar4822.mp3 - 542 K - Quicker download, sounds like AM radio
